June 2025 | The Importance of Self-Care and Mindfulness

Welcome to the June edition of the Community Wellness Newsletter from New Leaf Family

Services & Wellness Center. Each month we share mental health education, wellness resources,

and updates about the work being done to support individuals and families throughout our

community.

Following last month’s focus on Mental Health Awareness Month, this month we are exploring

the importance of self-care and mindfulness practices in supporting emotional health and

reducing stress. Developing simple habits that promote self-awareness and balance can help

individuals strengthen resilience and improve their overall well-being.

What Is Self-Care?

Self-care refers to the intentional actions individuals take to care for their physical, emotional,

and mental well-being. While self-care is often associated with relaxation or leisure activities, it

also includes everyday habits that help individuals maintain stability and balance.

Examples of self-care include:

 Getting adequate sleep

 Maintaining healthy routines

 Setting boundaries with work and responsibilities

 Engaging in activities that bring relaxation or joy

 Seeking support when facing emotional challenges

Practicing self-care consistently can help reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, and

support long-term mental wellness.

Understanding Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of focusing attention on the present moment without judgment. By

becoming more aware of thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations, individuals can respond to

stress more calmly and intentionally.

Mindfulness techniques may include:

 Deep breathing exercises

 Meditation or quiet reflection

 Mindful walking or movement

 Journaling or gratitude practices

These practices encourage individuals to slow down and become more aware of their internal

experiences, helping them manage stress more effectively.

Community Support in Action

At New Leaf Family Services & Wellness Center, we believe that emotional well-being is

supported not only through therapy but also through access to practical resources that promote

stability.

Our programs and community support services include:

 Behavioral health counseling and therapeutic support

 Psychosocial rehabilitation and life-skills development

 Transportation assistance through bus passes

 Referrals for transitional housing programs

 Food and clothing pantry support (based on availability)

 Assistance with Nevada ID and Social Security applications

 Community referrals connecting individuals and families with additional support

resources

These services help individuals address everyday challenges while focusing on their personal

growth and well-being.

Client Perspective

Many individuals discover that practicing small self-care habits can make a meaningful

difference in their emotional health.

“Learning to take time for myself and practice mindfulness helped me manage stress in a

healthier way. It gave me the space to think more clearly and respond to challenges with a calmer

mindset.”

— New Leaf Client

Wellness Tip of the Month

Try a Simple Mindfulness Exercise

You can practice mindfulness in just a few minutes each day.

Three-Minute Reset Exercise

1. Sit comfortably and close your eyes if possible.

2. Take slow, deep breaths while focusing on your breathing.

3. Notice any thoughts or emotions without judgment.

4. Gently return your attention to your breath.

This simple exercise can help calm the mind and restore emotional balance during stressful

moments.
