March 2025 | Practical Strategies for Managing Stress and

Anxiety

Welcome to the March edition of the Community Wellness Newsletter from New Leaf Family

Services & Wellness Center. Each month we share mental health education, community impact

updates, and resources designed to support emotional well-being and stability for individuals and

families throughout our community.

Following last month’s discussion on trauma-informed care, this month we are focusing on

practical strategies for managing stress and anxiety in everyday life. Stress and anxiety are

common experiences, and learning healthy ways to respond to them can help improve emotional

balance, resilience, and overall well-being.

Understanding Stress and Anxiety

Stress and anxiety can arise from many sources, including work responsibilities, family

obligations, financial pressures, or personal challenges. While occasional stress is a natural part

of life, ongoing stress without healthy coping strategies can affect both mental and physical

health.

Recognizing the signs of stress early—such as difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, or

trouble sleeping—can help individuals take steps to manage their well-being before stress

becomes overwhelming.

Practical Strategies for Managing Stress

At New Leaf Family Services & Wellness Center, we encourage individuals to develop

practical habits that support emotional balance. Here are several techniques that can help reduce

stress and anxiety:

Practice Controlled Breathing

Deep breathing helps regulate the nervous system and can quickly reduce feelings of stress.

Try the 4–4–4 breathing technique:

 Inhale slowly for 4 seconds

 Hold your breath for 4 seconds

 Exhale slowly for 4 seconds

Repeating this exercise several times can promote calm and improve focus.

Establish a Consistent Daily Routine

Creating structure in daily activities—such as regular sleep, meals, and scheduled tasks—can

help reduce feelings of uncertainty and improve emotional stability.

Focus on What You Can Control

Stress often increases when we focus on situations outside of our control. Practicing mindfulness

and redirecting attention to manageable tasks can help create a greater sense of balance.

Stay Connected

Talking with trusted friends, family members, or support professionals can provide

encouragement and perspective during stressful times.

Engage in Healthy Activities

Physical movement, journaling, meditation, or spending time outdoors can support both

emotional and physical wellness.

Community Support in Action

In addition to therapeutic services, New Leaf Family Services & Wellness Center continues to

support individuals and families by helping remove barriers that may contribute to stress and

instability.

Our community support services include:

 Transportation assistance through bus passes

 Referrals for transitional housing programs

 Food and clothing pantry support (based on availability)

 Assistance with Nevada ID and Social Security applications

 Community referrals connecting individuals and families with local resources

These services help individuals maintain stability while working toward improved emotional and

mental well-being.

Client Perspective

Many individuals who participate in our programs begin to discover new ways of managing daily

stress and responsibilities.

“Learning how to slow down and manage my stress has made a big difference in my life. The

support and guidance helped me create better routines and stay focused on my goals.”

— New Leaf Client

Stories like this remind us that small changes can lead to meaningful progress over time.

Wellness Tip of the Month

The Power of Grounding Techniques

Grounding techniques help bring attention back to the present moment during periods of stress or

anxiety.

Try the 5-4-3-2-1 method:

 Name 5 things you can see

 Name 4 things you can touch

 Name 3 things you can hear

 Name 2 things you can smell

 Name 1 thing you can taste

This simple exercise can help calm the mind and restore focus during stressful moments.

Message from Our Founder

Stress and anxiety are experiences that many individuals face, but no one has to navigate those

challenges alone. At New Leaf, we focus on helping individuals develop practical tools and skills

that support emotional resilience and stability. Every step toward healthier coping strategies is a

step toward a stronger and more balanced future.
